The CD4017 is a 5-stage divide-by-10 Johnson counter with 10 decoded outputs and a carry-out bit. It is designed for medium-speed operation and ensures a hazard-free counting sequence. With a wide supply voltage range and high noise immunity, the CD4017 is suitable for various digital applications, including LED chasers, frequency dividers, and timing circuits. Each of the 10 decoded outputs transitions to a logical “1” only at its respective time slot, staying high for one full clock cycle. The carry-out signal completes a full cycle for every 10 clock input cycles, making it useful for cascading multiple counters.
